How could my IPhone update without giving me a message to back it up?

My IPhone Updated without telling me to back up to the cloud beforehand . I just found out that I was supposed to back up to the cloud before updating. It updated anyways. Without giving me a message to back up. I am not very technically savvy but I am not that stupid either. My IPhone updated without me backing up. So what does that mean. I would like to know. Probably lose all my information? These phones are getting too smart for me I guess. Any comments? iPhone 12 ProMax

It is recommended to back up before updating in case something goes wrong. but the iPhone will not in any way suggest you backup before updating. That is something you need to do on your own before updating as a recommended precaution.

If you have iCloud Backups turned on in Settings->Account (top of settings)->iCloud->iCloud Backup, then it backups every night when connected to power and Wi-Fi automatically and there's nothing else you need to do.

You can of course initiate a backup at any time from Settings->Account (top of settings)->iCloud->iCloud Backup.

If it updated automatically, and nothing is wrong, the no data would have been lost and all is fine.

Backups are a precaution, not something you are forced to do before updating. Just something you should do to in fact avoid any data loss, should the update go wrong for some reason.
