The first year is free, but you'll still need to have a different payment method on file to get it. After that, if the card is valid in the iTunes Store, redeem it normally; otherwise, you can't.

If the Trade In was done at the same time as the purchase of the new phone, the card would have been applied to the purchase price of the new iPhone. It would not be able to be used separately.


If it was not applied or the trade in was done at a different time than the iPhone purchase then you just need to redeem the gift card into your Apple ID to transfer the balance to your account. It will then automatically use that balance to pay for the Apple TV+ subscription every month when it is due after the free year is over. You cannot pre-pay it if that is what you mean.
