M1 and RAID Thunderbolt 3 Drives

I’m getting the new 24-inch iMac. I’m considering using it with a LaCie 2Big Dock RAID Thunderbolt 3 drive. But I see on the LaCie site that because of the M1 chip, I would have to change to “Reduced Security” settings. This concerns me. On the other hand, I'm told by G-Technology that their RAID Thunderbolt 3 drive does not require any settings change for M1. That would seem to make the G-Tech drive a better option.

I appreciate all feedback.

The only time you would need to change the security settings is if you are using the external drive to boot. If just using as a normal external drive or for Time machine then you do not have to touch the security settings.

No, you don't need to change any security settings, UNLESS you are using the LaCie as a boot volume (to startup macOS.)

G-Technology and LaCie both have their advantages and disadvantages. I typically prefer LaCie over G-Technology.

(BTW, Apple sells the LaCie drive you're interested in: LaCie 8TB or 16TB 2big Dock Thunderbolt 3 RAID Storage - Apple. I always try to buy from Apple whenever possible.)

Cheers,

Jack
