My Iphone 5s won't charge it shows a blinking red battery and lightning cable at the bottom and doesn't seem to detect the charger. When I plug it in the screen turns on showing the same red battery and cable which I know means it is not charging, I attempted to leave it on the charger anyway but still no charge. Can anyone help with this issue please?

If the battery has never been replaced, it may have failed and will no longer take a charge.
With a phone that old, replacing it might be a better option. You can click on Get Support in the upper right corner to reach out to Apple for repair options.
