I updated my Mac to iOS 11.3.1 and now my Microsoft Word needs to be updated. I went to the App store but it looks like it's not supported and I need to subscribe to 365 for $69.99 a year?

If your Microsoft Office disappeared on Catalina macOS 10.15 or Big Sur macOS 11, it was Office 2011 or earlier; very old, and using the old and now-gone 32-bit app interfaces from older macOS.

As mentioned above, Microsoft does sell Office licenses, as well as the Office 365 subscription.

The current Office 2019 is being replaced by Office 2021 later this year, to make this purchase decision somewhat more complex. Microsoft is on a ~three-year release cycle at present, and supports the current Office version on the current and two most recent macOS versions. (More)

LibreOffice works too and as was mentioned, and the free Apple iWork apps Pages, Numbers, and Keynote can read and write most Microsoft Office files.
