sound only works on bluetooth

after listening to a podcast on bluetooth wireless earbuds (which I do every day), I disconnected the bluetooth. Something went wrong, however. My sound disappeared. The volume buttons don't work and no volume bars appear when I press the buttons. I can't make phone calls because the speaker and microphone don't work. However, when I connect to any bluetooth device, everything works again. Volume buttons/volume bars show up and work, speaker and microphone also work but only through the bluetooth earbuds or device.

I can't seem to disengage the bluetooth drivers. Any suggestions?

I've tried hard reset (volume buttons work respond, so it isn't working)

I've forgotten the devices and reconnected them. No change.

I've reset network setting and later reset all settings. no change.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Joe

Hi there Joseph,

We'd like to help get the sound working not just when using Bluetooth, but when you decide to use the built-in speaker/mic on your iPhone.

You mentioned trying some great steps, but we have a few things we'd like to check with you as well:

  1. Have you already tried a regular restart? If not, here are the steps: Restart your iPhone
  2. If you have a compatible model, the latest version is 14.5.1. You can verify the version number installed within Settings > General > About. Here's a link that'll show how to first back up, then Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  3. What occurs when you tap the switch to completely disable it from Settings > Bluetooth?

We look forward to hearing back from you about these details. Take care until then!

Hi.

  1. Yes. Multiple regular resets. Also, as of now, 3 or four hard resets, plus resets when clearing network settings and clearing all settings.
  2. I'm running 14.5.1 already. I listed that, but it has disappeared from the post: iPhone 7, iOS 14.5.1, 181GB free ROM
  3. Nothing interesting happens. I believe you are talking about toggling the Bluetooth switch off and then on again. Tried it many times. And for extended periods. No change.

Last night, I let the battery fully drain and then charged it from zero. I know it has nothing to do with the sound, but I'm trying everything I can think of and that's a bit like zapping the PRAM in the old days. Maybe.

Any idea what this could be? I hold out hope it isn't a hardware issue because when I'm operating a bluetooth device, everything works (through Bluetooth).

Thanks!

Joe

Apple support doesn't support my 4 year old iphone 7. Are there other options?

Also, my home button stopped functioning six months, so I use the assistive touch button. When I reset all settings, the assistive touch button disappeared and I had a hard time getting back into the phone. If I do a restore, will I need to use the home button or will it restore to my backup? Also, can I safely back up the phone now and use that as my restore point, or use my last backup before the speaker stopped working?

Also, I'm on the other side of the world (Thailand) so it takes about a while for you to answer or me to see and respond.

Thanks!
