How to set default user at login screen?
My MacBook Pro always presents the wrong user for the first login after restarting. I cannot find any way to change the default user.

De-encryption took a long time, but removing FileVault does seem to have fixed the problem.
Wait... do you have FileVault turned on?
If you don't want or need the other account, make sure to backup any documents in there that you need, and delete the account.
The machine had to be repaired and the hard drive was replaced. A TimeMachine backup was used to restore the machine, but for some reason it restored with 2 users of the same name. I don't know why.
From then on, it has always presented the wrong user at start-up.
The initial logon screen always shows the wrong user. I cannot change it. There are no options available. I have to logon with that user, then change user.

How do you mean “default user”? It should either show you a list of users or let you type username and password.
How did you set up this default user? I never heard of such a thing being possible. There is no interface for it in System Preferences->Users & Groups. Did you use Directory Utility?
Yes it is. I will try turning it off.
I am scared to do that in case I cannot logon afterwards.
Decryption will take 3 hours.
Turning FileVault off has not had any obvious effect yet.
