If you saw smoke, then some component related to the Display has burned out quite literally (either the Display itself or the Logic Board or both if you are really unlucky). You will need to have the laptop repaired. If you don't have a backup, then I suggest you connect an external display and make a good backup. You may need to force the video to the external display by connecting a USB keyboard and mouse so you can close the lid and use Clamshell mode. Sometimes it can be hard to force video to the external display if the internal display is still being recognized, but non-functional.
Expect an expensive repair since there are no inexpensive parts with the USB-C Apple laptops. There are three major parts on these laptops (Display, Logic Board/CPU/GPU/Memory/SSD/WiFi, and Top Case/Keyboard/Trackpad/Battery/Speaker Assembly) and they all cost about $450 US each just for the parts. You will need to have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider examine the laptop to provide you with a repair estimate.
