I have iMac from 2012 operating on macOS High Sierra version 10.13.6. Need to upgrade my software for TurboTax to recognize. Want to upgrade to Big Sur (I guess?). Can I do so? And should I do so or just buy new Mac?

The model year of an iMac is available at Apple menu > About This Mac.

A late-2009 through mid-2011 iMac can be upgraded to High Sierra 10.13.6 but no later version.

A late-2012 through late-2013 iMac can be upgraded to Catalina 10.15.7. See: How to get old versions of macOS - Apple Support

A mid-2014 or later can be upgraded to the current version of Big Sur. See: How to upgrade to macOS Big Sur - Apple Support

Personally, I would upgrade to the latest version possible (Catalina in your case).

Another option (that I used even though I have a Mac running Big Sur) is to use the online version of TurboTax. It is very good and it will run on much older systems. See: https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/system-requirements
