phone was given to me so how do I remove activation lock?
An iphone 7 was given to me so I have no proof of purchase. How do I then remove the activation lock so as to erase the device and reset to factory defaults?

You contact the person you got it from. If they can’t or won’t remove the lock, return it for a refund if possible or recycle it and buy a phone you can use.
