Error “unable to connect to Apple Watch” when trying to use mask unlock feature of iPhone

Lately I get the error “Unable to connect to Apple Watch” whenever I try to unlock the phone when I have a face mask on. However the watch *is* connected as denoted by the green phone icon in control center on the Apple Watch. Not sure what to do, google doesn’t seem to turn up any results on this specific error.
