Disabling the startup chime settings not saving a bug?

Im running Big Sur 11.3.1

I recently got my m1 Macbook Air and tbh the startup chime is annoying and the worst thing is that the setting is not saving and just keeps checking the box once i close and open the settings again.

is this a bug of any kind and why doesnt apple make an official statement?

It's a bug that started with (I believe) Big Sur 11.3 and continues with 11.3.1. I'm seeing it as well and I've read that others are also seeing the issue. Google "Can't disable play sound on startup preference"

The only work-around that I know of is to try to remember to mute the MacBook's speakers before shutting down or restarting...or else that chime will blast you once again.

Hopefully it will be fixed with the next Big Sur update.
