Apple Watch 5 overheated on charger

My Apple Watch 5 updated to new iOS and overheated while on charger. It now does not peer back on. It’s not showing any sign of life. No charge indicator if I try to charge it again. (And it gets really hot again)

anyone else experienced the same? I feel this should not be an out of warranty issue due to faulty iOS update. (Watch is over a year old)
