Sound Icon not showing preferences

Since updating to Catalina, the sound icon in the menu bar only shows the slider, but sometimes, as it should, also show to connect to sound preferences. I've tried removing the icon and then turning it on again, but no success.

Please see attached. This is what it should show, but mostly only the slider.

To be clear, it is the volume control -- both the keyboard control AND the audio control dialog. Sound comes out, the mute button works, and using the volume slider will mute the sound and turn it back on, but the volume will not change - sound is either on or off, but I can't change the volume. This is true for the internal speak as well as a connected bluetooth speaker. I'm no aware of any software update, nor does rebooting make any difference. One day it simply stopped working. Volume icon glitch The volume icon in the menu bar keeps turning grey and white and I can't open it within the menu bar. I recently updated to Catalina. When I open system preferences manually, it stops and the audio returns. During some calls, my computer also randomly mutes itself and when the sound returns, I can't hear the other person in the call. Anyone experiencing the same problem?

Why can't I open sound preferences? I can't open the sound panel is system preferences. I lost all sound on my computer, however my usual way of fixing this (opening sound and selecting my headphones/other speaker) didn't work because every time I try to open sound, it makes the preferences app unresponsive, then says "could not open sound preference pane". MacBook Air (Mid-2012) Running MacOS Catalina 10.15

No idea why that would happen.

As a possible workaround: if it is showing just the slider, click away from the menu and then Option-click - this ought to show not just Output options, but Input also. Maybe this can help bring up the rest of the menu.
