So at the Apple store near mine there is usually an appointment system for people lining up to purchase products, does that mean I would need to book an appointment for pickup as well or do you simply just go there on the day indicated and pick up at any time?
Really? I was just given an email with a QR code that told me to come in store today, no specific time arrangement. Sorry about sounding dumb, I’m new to ordering online for pickup. Mine was due in early June delivery but when I checked this morning and saw the availability in store today I purchased it as fast as I could haha
I was told (this is in the US) there was no need for a pickup as they may have you wait outside while they bring out the product to you (and I actually saw that in action while waiting for my Genius Bar appointment).
The purchasing appointments in my area are for people who want to "shop" in the store with a sales specialist - not simply pick up.

When you purchase a product for Apple pickup, there will be a time for pickup. Just go at that time. No need for an additional appointment.
