Can I download songs from Apple Music to my Mac, then sync and play them on an iPod Nano?

Wondering if it is possible to download songs to my Mac, and then sync them to an iPod Nano.

That was my fear and assumption, despite being told otherwise by Apple Support. It stinks, because they are both Apple devices, but I get it, since the iPod nano isn't an iOS device and doesn't have wifi. However, back in the day, iTunes purchases had DRM and they were playable on iPods, so I had hoped that Apple Music files would play back on an iPod nano.
