Just received the new remote. I charged it and attempted to pair to my Apple TV 4K, but it never gets past the “Bring it closer to your Apple TV to continue pairing” screen, even though I’m laying it on top of the Apple TV. I also got the same result on another Apple TV with the exact same results.
Any ideas?
Your Apple TV needs the update. You’ll need to use your old remote (or the remote app on your iPhone) to do the Apple TV update. Then, you’ll be able to pair the new remote to the tv.

Same situation here with auto updates on and not actually updated. I just don’t understand why apple didn’t/doesn’t just add a line to the pairing instructions, “Make sure your Apple TV is running the latest software.” Easy peasy, simple solution. Instead I have to waste 10 minutes trying to pair over and over holding the **** thing at different angles, and then 10 more minutes trying to find an answer on google. Irritating.
Problem solved, thanks to a @davemark on Twitter. Just needed to update tvOS.
Apologies, although my Apple TV has always been set to auto-update, apparently that doesn’t actually mean anything. I went ahead and chose Update and it started an install—from version 4.2 to 4.6. Might as well leave auto update switched off and just check it manually every so often…
Got it! Connected via Ethernet to my new router then was able to control via iPhone.
Was able to update then pair new remote.

Same here, not only am I on auto update but also the beta channel and still had no luck until manually running an update. Odd play, Apple…
The solution is right there my friend! You just need to update tvOS manually.

Well, my Apple TV 4K is set to Auto-Update, so it should already be at most recent version of tvOS. But unable to pair, just as you described.

Instead of just telling people the problem is solved maybe tell them how it was solved. It would make it a lot faster for others that have the same issue but don’t have social media accounts.
How am I supposed to download an update if I can’t connect my remote to setup the Wi-Fi?
