New 2021 SE phone copy/paste popup choice almost never shows

Last phone was a 6 I replaced with a new SE so bank apps would work again... but this new SE screen functions is REALLY frustrating.. both in getting the **** cursor to go where I tap it like when texting, but the main issue in this question is how to get the copy/paste/select text is incredibly difficult to get to pop up, plus just now in a contact NOTES field, the select text option won't pop up or work at all, no matter how often I press my finger down or how long I hold my finger down before releasing my finger, expecting a popup of choices.
