Contacts won’t save updated names on iPhone 11

When I create a new contact or add somebody to an existing contact and I refresh my iMessage app, it unassigns them from the contact and reverts back to their phone number even though the contact itself is still available in the contacts app. I did what other people said with changing accounts and fiddling with iCloud but nothing is working.
