My phone only rings with my headset on. Purchased new Ipod connected with iphone. When playing mustic or book come through on iphone. Stopped doing that but now my iphone does not ring. I can only hear my phone when my headset is on.

My iphone does not announce an incoming calls. The only time I know a call is coming through is when I wear my headset. Do not Disturb is not on.

Hi Brodieg,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities! We appreciate you reaching out for help with this issue you're experiencing when receiving an incoming call. Let's get to the bottom of it together.

To start, please let us know more about what's going on. You mentioned that unless you're using your headset, your iPhone isn't ringing when you have an incoming call. Is this correct? Does your iPhone vibrate, or otherwise indicate that there's an incoming call?

Are you experiencing similar audio issues in any other apps? For example, what happens when you play a song or video? Are you able to hear all sound clear from your iPhone speaker?

Is your headset connected via the Headphone or Lightning port on your iPhone, or is it connected wirelessly via Bluetooth? If it's connected via Bluetooth, what happens if you turn off Bluetooth in Settings > Bluetooth, then place a test call to your iPhone?

Be sure that the Ring/Silent switch is set to ring. The following guide has more information:

How to put your iPhone on vibrate, ring, or silent mode - Apple Support

If it's still not ringing, head into Settings > Sounds, and verify that the slider under RINGER AND ALERTS is set loud enough to hear, then test again.

Let us know if this information helps, or if you've got any questions.

Hi Brodie G,

Thanks so much for clarifying. To confirm we understand correctly, it sounds like your iPhone isn't playing any sound at all when not using your headset. Is this correct?

Have you had a chance to test in multiple apps if sound will play? Also, have you tried restarting your device?

A new version of iOS was released earlier this week. If you haven't had a chance to do so, we can recommend backing up your iPhone, then applying the iOS 14.6 update. Here's a guide with instructions:

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

The process of updating may help resolve unexpected software behavior. If you find that you're still not hearing any sound from your device, you'll want to ensure that any external protective accessories are removed, and refer to the troubleshooting steps in this guide:

If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker - Apple Support

We're here for you if you've got any questions.

Have a great day!

When I turn off my headset or bluetooth my phone does not play the rings tones when receiving calls. I purchased a new Ipod a few weeks ago and after setting it up my ipod would ring when someone was calling. If I was listening to a book through my ipod, my phone would keep track of where I was at in the book. I turned the setting off on my ipod to stop the calls from transferring to it now my phone made no sound If I shut off my blue tooth and call my phone it makes no sound. If I play music on my phone, no sound,. If I turn on bluetooth , put on my headset the phone plays the music through my headset., not through the phone. If I'm not wearing my headset and someone calls I don't know I'm getting a call. Something has gotten switched off and I'm not savvy enough to figure out where. Brodie G
