how do i restore a backup if my password isn't working

Trying to back up my iphone after a reset and can't remember my previous password

If you mean the passcode (4 or 6 digit numerical), you will have to erase the phone using your home computer using iTunes. Follow the directions in the related article at the top of the page which brought you here.
