How do I make the F4 Spotlight, F5 Dictation, and F6 Night Shift function keys work?
Hello Bruce Kieffer,
Thanks for reaching out through the Apple Support Communities, and congratulations on your new iMac!
To clarify, do you not get any response when attempting to use the F4, F5 or F6 keys?
Do other keys still work as expected, such as F1 and F2 adjusting the screen brightness?
If not, you may need to adjust the default function key behavior per the steps in this article: How to use the function keys on your Mac
Hopefully those details and that resource will help to further isolate and address this issue.
Take care.
I do NOT get any response when attempting to use the F4, F5 or F6 keys, and the rest of the function keys work as expected. The help link does not help for this problem. I tested booting into safe mode and those three FN keys do not work then either.
OK, update, but this makes no sense. I unchecked "Use F1, F2, etc." they work now. Go figure. That seems backwards. I will test more.
Why would only those three FN keys not work with "Use F1, F2, etc." checked, but the rest do work?

FWIW, it is not backwards. If you check "Use F1, F2…" as normal function keys, they do just that. They no longer perform the special functions printed on the keys.

So with that setting unchecked the FN keys work as the icons printed on the top of the keys, and with that setting checked the FN keys work as the icons printed on the top of the keys when you also hold down the FN key, but F4, F5, and F don't not work with the FN key held down. I'm thinking this is a bug.
I'm thinking you're correct.
Call me the Apple Orkin man!
I just realized that FN6 is for Do Not Disturb, but it still doesn't work! I sent a bug report to Apple. Please do the same if you have this problem too.
Your wish is my command Mr. Orkin. 😎
I suspect it's a problem for many. I see the same issue on my M1 MacBook Air.
