iPhone 4 - Speaker volume too low

Hello all,

I bought yesterday an iPhone 4.
Today, while activating, I noticed that the speaker didn't make a sound (ringtones, keyboard, lock, iPod...), while everything worked fine with headphones in.
I already tried to restore many times, and no result.

Later, I noticed that keeping the iPhone speaker very close to my ear, I can barely hear the sounds (again, ringtones, keyboard etc.). Anyway, this is not helpful, as I can't normally hear those sounds.

Is this an hardware or software issue? Does anyone know how to fix that? I already planned to go to Genius Bar, but due to many issues I have in the meanwhile, it would be very cool to be able to solve by myself. 🙂

Hi, I had the same problem now - all system sounds and iPod sounds without headphones were very low. I managed to solve it. Maybe it will help you too.
1. Make a random call (do not use Earphones).
2. Turn on "Speaker" while calling ( So you want to turn on "loud speaker communication")
3. Now press "volume Up" button (on the side) and increase volume to MAX
4. Hang up and check your system sounds volume - it should be ok now

I had this happen. All the volumes went down at least 50% despite being on high volume with no volume limit set. I thought my car FM transmitter had gone haywire because I could barely hear anything while playing music or making calls. Then realized afterward the phone volume was the issue.

I rebooted the phone and all was well again.

Anyone know what causes it?
