Screen mirroring used to be so simple. Now it's difficult just to view a movie from my iMac hard drive to projector. Why is that?

i would need to know a few things to help.
what year is your Mac?
what adapter are you using? and
what is happening when you try?
i used to use a projector, now i have an HDTV. i'm also on a newer mac since my projector days. however, the only change i made was a new USB-C to HDMI adapter vs. a mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter with the old setup. the mirroring options (in display preferences) were the same for both setups.

It's probably because something has changed in the time interval from when your screen mirroring was so simple and now.
So this is what's become of Apple Support Communities....so sad.
