First, are you able to connect to your Routers WiFi network?

If, having connected to your Router’s WiFi you still cannot connect to the internet, you may need to restart your WiFi Router. To restart you home router, disconnect power - then wait at least 30 seconds before restarting. When you router has rebooted (which may take several minutes), force-restart your iPad:

If you have a VPN connection, disable it.
What happens if you connect your iPad to a different Wifi Network (at a friend's house, or in a public place that offers wifi connection)?
If it works, the problem is in your home wifi network. See this support article:--> Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support
If it doesn't work, try to go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Nework Settings... bearing in mind that that proceure also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before, but NO other data is affected. When done, restart your ipad.

Being connected to a wifi network doesn't necessarily mean that you have Internet access.
Try to restart your modem router (waiting for its complete autoconfiguration), then reconnect your iPad and test it.

I followed your advice and this resulted in my having a very brief internet connection with the WiFi symbol showing but this quickly disappeared again and left me without internet connection.
