ipod Touch (1st generation) power button

Yesterday my ipod's power button wasn't working right. To unlock it I had to press the menu button because pressing the power button wasn't working. Then to lock it again I had to repeatedly press the power button around 30 times. Then to shut it off I had to hold the power button for 3 minutes. And that only worked once. After a little while it went back to doing what it was supposed to. Then today it started doing the same thing and is still doing it. Is there anyway to fix it? I Really don't want to buy a new ipod. Any help it greatly appreciated.

Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Mikalatte--

I'd at least take it in to be looked at--exams are free, if I am not mistaken.

I don't think it's a software issue...though you could try a reset and a synch.
