I solved this issue by following steps.
First reboot your router and power cycle the HomePod, then try again. If it still won't update either manually or after leaving overnight with automatic updates enabled try the Press the top of HomePod to reset it method from Reset HomePod - Apple Support, and then try to get the update once more. If that fails reach out to Apple Support.

Tried to do everything that have said here and my Original HomePod is still with the iOS 14.4.
My other 2 Original HomePods and my HomePod Mini have already updated to iOS 14.6.
My iPhone iOS is updated to 14.6.
As a matter of fact, all my Apple devices are updated to 14.6. (Apple TV, iPad, iPhone and 3 HomePods)… only one Original HomePod that I can’t update, still remains in iOS version 14.4.
If somebody can help, I’ll be grateful.
I'm having this same issue. I actually have the update sitting in my home app for one of my homepods, when I hit update it spins (on my screen) for a second and nothing happens. I have 6 homepods and they all updated except for one, and I can't force it to update now.
My HomePod is not updating for 14.6 either. I only have one HomePod. I have rebooted the HomePod a couple of times. I powered on and off my network. Then I did a system reset to the HomePod (which then required adding back in the bridges and Lutron devices). I also tried toggling on/off the auto update in the Home app but it still says that 14.6 is available. Any other ideas?
Turn the option for automatic updates off and then back on again. See if it updates automatically overnight.

Reboot your iPhone as well.

Yes. Forgot to mention that but tried that too.
It seems that it did auto update, finally, overnight after doing a factory reset.
