My Touch ID malfunctions 80% of the time on my MacBook when trying to log in, but works when in most other functions, for instance it never malfunctions when used to access passwords . This goes for my iPhone as well. What might be the problem?

Touch ID
Try turning your finger a bit or a light tap.
System Preferences > Touch ID > Use Touch ID for:
Uncheck the box beside “Unlocking your Mac”.
Log out.
Log back in
Check the box beside “Unlocking your Mac”.

If this doesn’t help, reset SMC and then try performing the step posted above.
