Copy and paste from Mac to iPhone and vice versa

Hi, I used to be able to copy and paste things between devices but it no longer allows me to do so even though Bluetooth and airdrop are on ?! Any ideas why ?

Hello elpida288,

It sounds like you’re asking about a Continuity feature called Universal Clipboard not working on your devices. The following article has some helpful things to check: Use Universal Clipboard to copy and paste between your Apple devices

Let us know how that goes.

elpida288,

Alright, we have more troubleshooting to work through. As you go through this please test after each step using an Apple app such as Mail, Safari, Notes, etc. If after one of the steps you find the feature is working, you can stop there. Also, creating a backup and installing the update on your Mac is a great idea.

  • Toggle Handoff off and back on for both devices.

For your Mac that's in System Preferences > General

For your iPhone that's in Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff

  • Toggle Bluetooth off and back on for both the source and destination devices.
  • Restart the Wi-Fi router(s) and modem.
  • Forget the Wi-Fi network on both devices and reconnect

For your Mac that's in System Preferences > Network > Advanced, then click your network and the minus sign

For your iPhone that's in Settings > Wi-Fi, then tap the 'i' by the network name and choose 'Forget This Network'

Keep us posted, please.

elpida288,

Thanks for checking those settings. Do other Continuity features work between your devices? Here are the other features you can check on: Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch

Are both of your devices up to date? You can check on your Mac in Apple menu > About This Mac and on your iPhone in Settings > General > About. Does restarting both devices change anything, even if temporarily?

In both Settings > Phone > Blocked on your iPhone and Messages > Preferences > Blocked on your Mac, can you make sure your Apple ID is not listed showing it has been accidentally blocked?

Thanks.

elpida288,

It could be, though then we'd expect to see other Continuity services interrupted as well. If you're able to test the situation while connected to a different Wi-Fi, that would rule out network issues.

We'd like to next have you reset user permissions on your Mac. This is a series of steps, if you’re not comfortable working through them here, that’s OK.

- From the Finder menu bar, choose Go > Home.

- Choose File > Get Info. An Info window for your home folder opens.

- If the Sharing & Permissions section at the bottom of the window isn't open, click the disclosure triangle in that section to open it.

- If the lock at the bottom of the window is closed, click the lock and enter an administrator name and password.

- From the action menu (the gear), choose “Apply to enclosed items,” then click OK to confirm.

Then

- Start up from macOS Recovery.

- You might be prompted to enter a password, such as the password of a user who is an administrator of this Mac. Enter the requested password to continue.

- Choose Utilities > Terminal from the menu bar in macOS Recovery.

- Enter this command in Terminal: repairHomePermissions

- The Repair Home app opens. Select your user account, click Next, then enter your administrator password.

- Click Next to unlock the volume and begin resetting permissions on your home directory.

- When done, click Exit to return to the macOS Utilities window.

- Select Reinstall macOS, then click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall macOS.
