MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020) useless usb ports.

Hello, I am running mac os big sur 11.4 right now and I can´t do the usb/thunderbolt ports work properly. In the previous version of mac os I was able to use a HP P700 external ssd through a usb hub at 350 mbps read/write so far away from the 950mbps that I used to get on my intel MBP. The worst part of the history is that after the 11.4 installation I only get 20 mbps hardly. Doesn't matter what I do it wont work.

I have reformatted to APFS, change the cables, plug directly (In fact when plugging the ssd directly to the usb port it freeze to zero the data transfer) etc etc etc. The thing is that I refuse to spend more money in powered thunderbolt 4 hubs because Apple is not doing their job well.

Any suggestions? anybody else suffering with their m1 mac?

Thanks.

Bmolague,

You're very welcome. We recommend following the steps in what to do If a Mac accessory needs more power or is using too much power to isolate the cause of the behavior to an individual component. This can be the USB hub, cables, other accessories, or the external drive itself. We understand your external drive works perfectly with your older Mac, but this doesn't tell us if the behavior you're experiencing is due to the ports on your MacBook Pro.

Once you're able to isolate what's causing the behavior, we can determine how to proceed. If we're able to confirm that your MacBook Pro isn't working as expected, we can provide service options to get an inspection completed.

If you're using any other accessories with your MacBook Pro, we'd recommend removing them to see if you notice a difference when only using your external drive with the correct port and adapter. This includes your USB hub, as we're currently unable to determine if this is what's causing the decreased speeds.

You can Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac for any hardware related issues. Please be sure to see the steps in the "Apple silicon" section.

If you only experience this behavior when using your external drive, or your USB hub, we'd also recommend contacting the manufacturers to see if there are any firmware updates, or recommendations to get the best performance possible. You can also use a different external drive with your MacBook Pro to see if you experience the same behavior, as this can help isolate the cause of the behavior to a specific component.

Thanks!

Hello Bmolague,

We understand your external drive isn't working as expected since updating to macOS version 11.4.

To start, we'd recommend completing the steps in what to do If a USB device doesn't work with Mac.

If you continue to experience the same behavior, please see what to do If a Mac accessory needs more power or is using too much power.

We'd also recommend confirming the cables that you've tested support the same or alter USB specifications as your Mac. If needed, please see MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020) - Technical Specifications and About USB on Mac computers.

Cheers!

Thanks for your reply, none of the listed abobe is working on my M1 Mac. I have done a full backup on a traditional hard disk and formatted the external SSD again, and through my USB hub it started to work again at half speed. Why do you suggest to run all those test if the drive is working perfectly on an older mac that sits besides the new one? All my cables are ok and certified by the manufacturer, the requested power is 896 and the available is 900 mA. I really don’t understand why Apple is not fixing this issue and if they don´t do it on a couple of months I am afraid I am going to sell this machine.

Thanks again for your reply.
