Big Sur APFS TM Setup with Quota Specified

Below is an example (using Terminal) of setting up an APFS Time Machine volume in Big Sur including a disk quota (150GB in the example).


Note the volume name (disk5 in the example) should be set the required APFS Container disk. Also note that "phrase" and "hint" should be specified (can be remembered in Keychain).

When using the Disk Utility, any quota specified for the APFS volume doesn't carryover once configure for Time Machine. This is especially important if the Time Machine is sharing its APFS Container with other volumes.


Correct. Role T is for Time Machine and APFSX specifies a Case-sensitive volume. Big Sur also requires encryption for Macs using the T2 chip (e.g. my Mac mini (2018)).
