Moving music links from Apple music (formerly called iTunes)

When I drag a sound file from my Music files to my desktop, or anywhere else, what I get doesn't look like or behave like a normal link. Whatever you want it call it, how can I move and use an Apple sound file to another place where it can be opened?

Links to files stored on your computer are only valid on your computer. No surprise if they are stripped from outgoing mail.

You should be able to drag and drop selected songs from Music to a folder or your desktop. The songs must be stored locally on the computer and not come from the Apple Music service. With rare exceptions (AAC ringtones or audiobooks) you should not edit the file extension of a media file directly. An alternative approach is to right-click on a selected item and use Show In Finder to reveal the location where the file is stored so that you can copy and paste to a new location.

Note that you should not share copies of copyrighted media files without the express permission of the copyright holder.

The Music app is an interface in which you can listen to music, edit properties, create playlists, etc. The items that have been added to the Music app are stored locally on your computer in folders, typically at paths such as ~/Music/Music/Media/Music/<Artist>/<Album>/## <Name>.<Ext> where ~ is your user's home folder. It is the files in the folders, accessible via the Finder app, that you can copy to other locations as required.

Links on and to items in your computer allow the same content to be referenced from multiple locations without duplicating files. They have their uses, even if they aren't what you want in this context.

Try this Manually:

Be certain you download it first.

  1. Download: the Music file
  2. Create: Folder on the desktop
  3. Right Click: on item in iTunes
  4. Select: Copy (Screenshot 1)
  5. Open: the folder on the Desktop
  6. Right Click: in folder
  7. Select: Paste Item (Screenshot 2)
  8. Right Click: on item (Screenshot 3)
  9. Modify: extension to mp3

It seems to me that you replied to my last message, but I don't see your answer now. Anyway, I now have the final and complete--I hope--answer to my question.

YOU CANNOT EXTRACT A NORMAL-LOOKING LINK FROM AN APPLE COMPUTER. Instead, Apple gives you an IMAGE/LINK, and this IMAGE/LINK is Apple's link. In other words, I can click on a song in my Apple music library, and Apple will produce an IMAGE/LINK. I can then use this IMAGE/LINK just I would use an ordinary link. The technician I talked to said that it is slower than the traditional link. The march of progress.

Oh, he also told me what I should now call iTunes. I guess "Music app" is now the term to use.

Thanks for your help/

"Thanks, but I guess you didn't see my last message. Apple informed me that they have replaced the ordinary link with their image/link. Frankly, I prefer the old-fashioned link, but if their image/link will do the same job, I'l have to be satisfied with it. Actually, I have no choice. ."

You are welcome.

Can you Download these?

Well, downloading it seems the ultimate way around having to use a link. What I've provided works for me.

  1. Here's what happens when I Copy and Paste it. Well, I can't past it here, but when I try to paste it in, for instance, MAIL, or NUMBERS, the following figure is posted:

Percuma.mp3

5 min. 52 sec

3.2 MB

I might add that the pasting process takes a very long time and that there is a right-pointing triangle about 2" to the immediate right. Oh, "Percuma" is the name of a song.

I'll now try the other method.

I just discovered that a test message I sent, that included an Apple image/link, arrived WITHOUT the Apple image/link. Sigh. So it looks like I'll have to be trying your method. I just hope that it's not as difficult as it appears. Maybe it's not actually that hard. Well, I'll soon (not yet) see. Anyway, thanks again for all of the effort you put into this solution. For the benefit of everyone who sees this, I will report on my success, or lack thereof.

Now we're getting somewhere, I think. Anyway, I will only comment on this sentence, "An alternative approach is to right click on a selected item and use Show in Finder to reveal where the file is stored." That made sense to me, so I did it. I found that the file is where I originally found it, in the Music app section. Well, I already knew that. As to what you said above this sentence, I guess I just don't understand. Of what possible value/use is a link that will work ONLY on the computer where it originated? Nevertheless, I feel that the first step I have taken will lead somewhere useful. I just don't understand at the moment.

Hey, that works. Why dintcha say so? I sent it to myself, and a working sound scroll bar appeared. I'll now try the same thing with the project that started me on this quest. It is a list of 27 songs with accompanying links, normal links, and ONE Apple image/link. When I tried to send that list before, it was received in goid shape, BUT the Apple image/link was missing. Let's see if that happens again.

May 27, 11:17 AM PST:

It didn't work. When I started to send my list with standard links and one Apple image/link, the Apple image/link had already disappeared before I could even click on SEND. Here's what it looked like in the dock. Twenty-one is a standaard URL, and 23 is an Apple image/link.

Note, the Apple image/link hs already disappeared.

{The three lines and the triangle above are Apple’s version of a link. I guess you could call it an image/link)
