My mac is stuck on OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 and I am forced to go to the App Store to check for updates. However, the App Store doesn't check for updates. What can I do?

How do I update the mac?

I've also clicked on "software update" from "about this mac" and nothing shows up either. Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and if your Mac model is recent enough, click on High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur.
