How do I use a new iphone without a sim

I'm thinking about buying a new iphone. I'm wondering how I could use it with out a sim. Do you need a sim it use it at first? I know on a ipod you need a number to make calls on it from facetime. With out a sim will I be able to make facetime calls.

I'm just wondering how I will hindered without an a sim on Iphone.
