Starting up applications from the Dock

I am used to starting up applications (either active or not yet active) from the Dock, rather than from Launchpad, since then I do not have to do additional typing. But I think it's quite annoying that then the new/running application always starts up behind the other apps that are already running. This means I always have to click the item in the Dock twice.

Is not there a more elegant solution for this (minor, I admit) problem?

Good news! I tried EtreCheck, but before posting the results here, I decided to try and find out how to restore the Dock to its original settings. To my surprise, that was rather easy to find.

I opened Terminal and typed in the command below and now everything works like a charm again.

Thanks for your help and thinking with me!

defaults delete com.apple.dock; killall Dock

Which applications exhibit this behavior?

Does this occur for a different user, e.g., Guest ? https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/set-up-other-users-on-your-mac-mtusr001/mac

Does this occur after starting up in Safe Mode

Consider the possibility of a third party software conflict.  EtreCheck can be used to investigate what is installed.  Give it Full Disk Access. You can post the report here. Someone might spot something.

The other user on my MacBook Air does not seem to have this problem.

On my side of the laptop, esp. Telegram (desktop version of the chat app) and Finder get in the way.

I have not tried Safe Mode yet, or EtreCheck; I will do so later today.

I recall that in the past I have used a little script in Terminal just to solve this problem. It did not help, maybe it messed up the Dock sessions. Is there a way to set the Dock back to normal using Terminal?

Now I will follow your suggestions… Later more.
