Deregister imessage/facetime of old number

I want to remove my old phone number that is showing up on my new iPhone. I no longer have my old iPhone as I sent it to Verizon for trade-in.

The online tool https://selfsolve.apple.com/deregister-imessage/ is useless because it sends a code to the phone number of the phone to which I no longer have access.

Settings -> Apple ID, iCloud, Media & Purchases -> Name, Phone Numbers, Email -> Reachable At

There are two phone numbers listed: One is the number of my new iPhone 12. The other phone number listed is from my iPhone 8, which I no longer have.

Select "edit" and then select the (i) next to the old phone number gives me the prompt: "Deregister Number to Remove". But I no longer have access to that device or number.

Are you using the Dual SIM feature on your iPhone?

  • I do not believe so

Are you able to select the iPhone 12 phone number from the two? If so, are you able to send and receive messages from that number?

  • Yes

If so, then you don't actually need to remove the phone number from iMessages. The next person who has that phone number will need to do so.

Here's another option you can try:

Add or remove your phone number in Messages or FaceTime

Cheers.
