My new watch will not pare with my phone. All my updates are up to date.

I’ve made sure all the updates are current but my new phone is still saying saying bring iPhone near Apple Watch. I even laid the watch on the watch on the phone trying to make it work. Help

My watch will not pair because when it tries, I get a message saying I need to update my phone. My phone has been updated and backed up. Watch will not pair bc it’s need to update. When it tried to update the watch the message appears that I need to update my phone. My phone is updated, backed up and have reset both more than once. The watch has been reset to factory.

Try restarting both devices - does that help? How about pairing with another iPhone then?
