My Time machine back up is failing, seemingly because the backup drive is out of space. It does not appear to be automatically trimming. I cannot see a way to trigger that. Can you help?

There used to be an issue when you set the parameter to "notify me before deleting old files".
When you have it set that way, when it gets ready to delete the old files, it gets stuck.
Once you know it is going to be doing that (delete old files) turn the notification OFF and your backups should resume.
