Prior to Big Sur, I had used the Photos app to create slideshows. I am now getting a random background color change from black to grey on some of the pictures. It was always a constant black background. It doesn't seem to have any pattern and mostly occurs with the last few pictures in the slideshow. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix?

Boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and check again.
NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;
• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Is this happening with new slideshows you've created after upgrading your macOS, or is it happening with slideshows created prior to upgrading? First we would like for you to install any available updates for Big Sur on your Mac: How to update the software on your Mac. After that, restart your Mac: How to turn your Mac on or off.
Once your Mac is back on, create a brand-new slideshow: Create slideshows in Photos on Mac. Respond back if you continue to experience the same thing. Also, let us know if the issue occurs with new slideshows, old slideshows, or both.

Hello and thanks for the reply. My MacBook Pro is up to date with Big Sur 11.4. My issue was with a slideshow created prior to my upgrade to Big Sur. When I made some minor edits to some of the pictures and exported it again, the grey background occurred and generally in the last couple of slides. Re-exporting did not fix this and was attempted multiple times. I just re-created the slide show from scratch after re-booting and it is still happening. I am also now getting some jitter on some of the pictures as they flow along to the music I added (same music as original).
The Photo app now seems unstable with Big Sur.
I'm getting the same grey when the photo doesn't fill the window.
But when I play it full screen instead of preview the sides are black:

Adding to the prior feedback, I used the Preview button within Photos and the jittering slides did not happen but the grey background still happened on the very last slide. If I manually select the pictures at random, the background will change to grey sometimes and back to black as I select various slides.
I did as you instructed and the very last slide showed a grey background in Safe Mode (again). If I click to edit the slide, it returns with black background but when exporting, it changes back to grey. Both in Safe Mode and after a normal reboot. No change to the issue.
Photos is Version 6.0 (350.0.100). I am using Dark Mode and have been since that was first offered. Here is the last picture in the slideshow showing the grey background. It is random, sometimes showing black and changing to grey depending on when I select that particular picture. Also. other pictures change randomly when I select them.
Forgot to add that I am using the Classic theme in Photos for my slideshow.
