How to save and use a numbers document on a Network Drive?

How do I use a numbers document (or pages etc.) on a Network Drive?

Every-time I make an adjustment to a document that is located on my network drive , I get a pop-up telling me autosave can't save. I click save anyway. The document shifts from (not saved) to (saved), and I continue until the next pop-up.........

The only "work around" is to move the document to my desktop, work on it, then move it back to my network drive when I'm finished. What a pain in the ***.

It had better be a filesystem that Apple's Pages/Numbers/Keynote autosave supports (e.g. iCloud Drive, APFS, HFS+, or possibly an AppleShare over TCP presented filesystem from a compatible NAS. Wary of Microsoft OneDrive.

I just watched a Numbers 11 document autosave to a mounted Synology NAS share without an issue. That remote filesystem is being shared via Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) over TCP/IP to Big Sur 11.4.

That seems strange that Big Sur Numbers would only be able to use documents stored on APFS shares AND degrade APFS support at the same time.

Unraid did support APFS but recently the updates removed it because Apple removed it too. Don’t update your NAS, you may lose that ability with Synology too.

So the answer to the OP is no (unless it’s a depreciated share)?

Those mounted shares from my Synology DiskStation are formatted as Linux EXT4 and they are configured to be exported as AppleShare and SMB mounts. The APFS filesystem is how my boot drive is formatted on the Mac side. When I perform a Get Info of a Numbers document on the Synology share, it shows afp://Diskstation_afpovertcp._tcp.local/share/name/test.numbers.
