Best way to recycle a 2003 emac

Hello! Apple recycled a Performa 560 and blue iMac for me. But it’s a shame to see working obsolete tech go to waste. This is especially true because these machines can open old file formats that are difficult to open, like .cwk files. I tried to see if there was a tv or movie studio who might want a working 2003 eMac, but I came up empty handed. I also looked, but found no recent outreach from anyone who needed cwk files opened, which I thought might be a good use for it! I converted all mine to PDF and burned them to a CD to save them since the browser was unable to respond to requests to attach files to emails. (In fact, I can’t get into gmail at all on this machine, although yahoo mail works.) I have been enjoying my DVDs on this machine. The picture and sound are superior to my Macbook. But **** this 50lb computer is a lot to lug around! It’s been through 13 moves with me.

1) Any suggestions on where this eMac should go, or should it go off to Apple for recycling?

2) How do I wipe it? Do I need the original startup discs to do that? I want to make sure all my data is wiped before it gets recycled.

Thanks!

Hi,

Yes, an eMac can still be very useful for word processing, etc. However, as you have discovered, its Internet capabilities are limited. The available browsers do not work with modern secure web sites. An exception could be the TenFourFox browser, but it would require Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5.

Have you tried to contact a thrift shop?

A bootable system disc would allow you to use a disk utility to erase/wipe/overwrite the hard disk (and reinstall an operating system).

Without an appropriate disc, the only option would be to manually move all personal files to the Trash, empty the Trash, and then use a repeatedly duplicated large file (in a folder) to fill/overwrite the empty space on the hard disk. Finally, move the duplicated file copies to the Trash, and empty the Trash. It is very difficult to locate and erase all personal files, though. Earlier, there was an old PowerPC version (dban-2.0.0_powerpc.iso) of a free wiping utility called DBAN that could be used to create a bootable CD from an ISO file.

Warning! Do not make any attempt to open the eMac in order to remove the hard drive. This kind of work is for qualified personnel only. There are high-voltage circuits inside. Dangerous charges can remain in various components even with the computer switched off and disconnected from the mains.
