Assuming that you do have an iPad8 as stated - and your Mac has the “older style” USB Type-A connectors - you will need a Lightning to USB Type-A cable.

you should always read the cable label that says the cable is for transferring data as well.
beside Apple products, you can search for Anker cables which are certified.
look for usb c to lightening cable.
