Any information about the printer make and model?


Generally speaking, a USB connection would require appropriate printer drivers. These may or may not be available. Even if drivers are available, it may be worth testing a network connection instead.

Add a printer on Mac - Apple Support


A printer supporting the driverless AirPrint technology (About AirPrint - Apple Support) does not require drivers. In this case, the printer would be compatible with macOS. The printer and the computer must be connected to the same network (wirelessly, or wired via LAN ports of a Wi-Fi router).
