express transit doesn't work?

I have designated my AppleCash "card" as my express transit. However when I try to use it in stores, I still have to tap "Pay With Passcode" at the bottom of the screen, then double tap the button, and then enter my passcode.... before it will let me just hold it near the reader.... I have to do this with all my cards. Even when not using the express transit card it's a pain in the butt. I thought this was supposed to be a simpler way to pay??? What am I doing wrong??
