Big Sur and InDesign Issues

I just upgraded to Big Sur (on a Macbook Pro 2019) and now InDesign keeps freezing. I’ve deleted InDesign’s preferences multiple times, uninstalled and reinstalled the latest v2021, tried reverting back to the version before (that which worked fine until I upgraded to Big Sur). Now when I uninstall and reinstall the latest version, InDesign works again HOWEVER when I activate my custom workspace, InDesign goes back to freezing again and again. It’s great that I can get it to stop freezing but it’s not ideal that I have to open all the palettes I use on a regular basis again and again. Anyone have any thoughts as to why activating a custom workspace would cause freezing?

UPDATE: The smooth sailing was short-lived, even with the default workspaces, the freezing started again. I did a chat. TheAdobe IT tech said that Big Sur added more permissions. So he added InDesign to "Full Disk Access."


So go to:

  • System Preferences > Security & Privacy > [unlock the lock icon in the bottom left corner] > Full Disk Access> Add InDesign.
  • He also turned off Graphics switching from System Preferences > Battery / Energy saver


Fingers crossed, everything seems to be working. I can even use my custom workspace.

Yes, you probably also got prompted to allow access to documents when you first fired up any Creative Cloud product after the Big Sur upgrade and if you don't "allow" it, you'll notice similar issues. You could either just give it this lower subset of access or do the full disk access as you did but that might be a little too much access, especially since Adobe formats have been known to be promiscuous in the past (one of the main reasons why Flash went away or why Acrobat is probably patched more frequently than other apps with similar usage).
