RX 6900 XT is now showing up

Hello,

Hope you do not mind to share some of your knowledge.

When I saw RX 6900 XT is now support in this article (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/macos-release-notes/macos-big-sur-11_4-release-notes)

just bought Sapphire RX 6900 XT Extreme Version

https://www.sapphiretech.com/en/consumer/toxic-radeon-rx-6900-xt-ee-16g-gddr6

to use with Sonnet eGPU 750ex. I am now using Big Sur 11.4

The graphic card fit properly but it is not showing up in my iMac.

On system report it is showing as External GPU vender AMD but not deatail.

Not showing up anything on my Mac menu bar.

Activity Monitor showing just one internal GPU.

Cannot see any external display card in Davinci.

When I remove thunderbolt cable this one showed up.

I also saw one post on here that it is working in either Mac Pro or as eGPU (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252719479) but not for me yet.

Do I need anything to do to use the eGPU with RX 6900 XT ?

or it is just unsupported ? I thought we are able to use it.

Can I get some knowledge to make it work.

Thanks in advanced.

Thanks for this reminding rakufmann87. Did not think that I should contact apple. I did after you suggestdas well as I sent email to Sapphire, Sonnet and AMD for help.

Sapphire Replied in their first and second emails reply as follow.

Dear Sir/Madam:

It is should be Apple Mac OS driver issue. We suggest you connect Apple support.

Dear Sir :

One more thing that after checking the spec of the Sonnet eGPU 750ex box , it only contains 750W PSU , but our card needs at least 850W and also they did not support our Toxic RX6900XT card (Please refer to page 8 of this pdf file -https://www.sonnettech.com/support/downloads/manuals/Compatibility_Graphics_Cards.pdf&source=gmail&ust=1622896756356000&usg=AFQjCNHn2tDK6RVRFjw4XrBKzZP523WQH A"> https://www.sonnettech.com/support/downloads/manuals/Compatibility_Graphics_Cards.pdf )

So that this is a compatible issue between this external box and our toxic board , maybe not related to the driver.

Thanks.

I know this is not 100% correct. As whoever replied me just saw the whole system requirement PSU W instead of the Toxic Card Power Consumption. The Toxic Card power consumption is just under <430 which is stated on their website. Something is not right with their answer.

Got replied from Sonnet as follow,

Thank you for the information. We are sorry to hear this is giving you trouble.

We have seen that updates to 11.4 may not fully realize the driver needed for the AMD6000 series, or cause a corruption which can cause similar symptoms.

If you are in an environment that allows for this, can you backup your data onto Time Machine, then erase your hard drive, then reinstall MacOS to the latest 11.4 version, then test again?

Let us know if any of this helps.

Thank you for your patience while we work through this.

So I just deleted my iMac partition and erased everything, and reinstalled a fresh copy of macOS Big Sur 11.4, but sadly it is the same. Sonnet 750ex is showing up in system information under Thunderbolt

It is just not working with the CARD.

Regarding Apple support, they requested me for 1 or 2 days to find out what is happening on their side with some senior engineers. Hope they will call me within 2 days.

It was my planned to buy Powercolour Card but the card is not cheap to buy in UK. So I contacted to Sonnet to seek some advice and confirmation. According to them it won't fit and it won't support. Then I contacted to Razer Core X to see whether I can use one of their one.

LOL ... their sales rep was worst. Told me none of the Razer Core X is support even 5700XT card because it is not in the list.

Had no choice but to buy Sonnet but need to find a card which will fit. Sapphire Toxic RX 6900 XT Extreme Edition fit properly inside Sonnet despite the radiator is hanging outside which is fine by me. I also bought Corsair RX850x PSU just in case Sonnet PSU is not enough. Now according to Sapphire I had to test with Corsair RM850x which is 850W and the result is SAME.

The card is still not showing up.

Just met a person on egup.io who is using Powercolur RX 6900XT card with Razer Core X on macOS Big Sur 11.4 flawlessly without any issue.

Could be one of the following reasons that is happening to me I guesse

1 ) Sonnet eGPU 750ex PCIe is somehow not working properly3

2) Sapphire Toxic RX 6900 XT Extreme Edition the one I bought is faulty.

3) macOS 11.4 have corrupt AMD driver.

4) Well my iMac 2020 has factory issue.

It is jut me and do not know why am I so unlucky 🙁

I found out what is happening to me. According to @kid from egpu.io (https://egpu.io/forums/mac-setup/radeon-rx-6800-xt-for-mac/paged/24/)

AMD new navi 21 is coming out different chipset. One is XTX and faster one is XTXH. How do we know that will be the case. All we see is 6800/6900 XT. But Apple only support XTX currently with macOS Big Sur 11.4

According to him Currently there are 6 XTXH models on the market:

1) ASRock AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT OC Formula 16GB

2) ASUS ROG-STRIX-LC-RX6900XT-T16G-GAMING

3) Gigabyte AORUS Radeon™ RX 6900 XT XTREME WATERFORCE WB 16G

4) PowerColor Liquid Devil AMD Radeon™ RX 6900 XT Ultimate 16GB GDDR6

5) PowerColor Red Devil AMD Radeon™ RX 6900 XT Ultimate 16GB GDDR6

6) Sapphire TOXIC AMD Radeon™ RX 6900 XT Extreme Edition

with

ASUS ROG-STRIX-LC-RX6900XT-T16G-GAMING is visually identical to ASUS ROG-STRIX-LC-RX6900XT-O16G-GAMING

PowerColor Liquid Devil AMD Radeon™ RX 6900 XT Ultimate 16GB GDDR6 is visually identical to PowerColor Liquid Devil AMD Radeon™ RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6

PowerColor Red Devil AMD Radeon™ RX 6900 XT Ultimate 16GB GDDR6 is visually identical to PowerColor Red Devil AMD Radeon™ RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6

Sapphire TOXIC AMD Radeon™ RX 6900 XT Extreme Edition is visually identical to Sapphire TOXIC AMD Radeon™ RX 6900 XT Limited Edition (#SKU#: 11308-06-20G) and Sapphire TOXIC AMD Radeon™ RX 6900 XT Limited Edition (#SKU#: 11308-04-20G, replaces one DisplayPort with USB-C)

But I am not sure your 6800XT is XTX or not.

Anyway, you can go https://skinflint.co.uk and search whether it is XTX or XTXH. in my case It is showing XTXH. I needed to return.

Just exchange with Sapphire AMD (reference) 6900XT and it works but make some noise while doing some rendering with C4D and Blender. Its like a cricket in my room. very annoying and making my tooth pain. Going to return this one too to get new one.

I think if you come to egpu.io, you might get some answer. Here on Apple is hopeless and you won't get much even Apple support. Promised me to called back to solve my issue in two days and now its over 10 days and they don't even bother.

RX 6900 XT is now showing up
