even when I am not using it, when it is just sitting idle at night, may have apps open or not, the fan will kick in and it roars. This is an Intel machine. Any ideas, this has not been happening before about 6 months ago. At least that I recall. Seems to happen a lot more often now

Thanks this is a different link that the one I found when I was searching before. This one includes instructions for older models. the other link indicated it would not work. Thanks will give it a go.
I looked up that solution but it said something about being an M1 (?) machine? I think it only works on newer machines?
It appears you did not follow the link for your model computer. Go back to the link and follow the instructions. SMC reset has been available for years on older Macs including your 2015 model.
