Audio in Truck

New iPhone 12 , 2014 GMC Sierra

Bluetooth to stereo works as long as I don’t charge phone.

When I charge phone the audio options disappear and only Dock shows up. On radio it shows connected to iPhone but no audio from maps or calls.

Pretty basic use case , how to use phone in vehicle and charge at same time ? How make dock work or keep dock dock from showing up so Bluetooth will work?

iPhone 12, iOS 14

It’s your vehicle that’s asserting use of the USB dock protocol, which has changed since 2014. Using a 12 volt port would isolate this iPhone away from it.

it’s possible that some of your other USB ports are only charging ports and do not have audio connections.

Hello Iphone3249,

Thank you for posting on Apple Support Communities.

If you audio is interrupted when you plug the phone to a lightning cable, it might be that your car is trying to route the audio via the lightning cable. (The charging cable on iPhone is also use to transmit audio) You should check if your car uses auxiliary as one of the audio options, as this could be the reason why it stops playing via Bluetooth as soon as you plug it in.

If your radio is OEM/stock then, you could also reach out to the manufacture for support so they can help you understand what audio options your car can use and how to troubleshoot it, if it happens to be unexpected behavior from your radio.

Good luck!

You’ll probably have much better results using a USB charger that plugs into a 12 volt power port (lighter plug) rather than using a USB port that’s built into the vehicle. A vehicle USB port from 2014 was probably made to work well with iPods and much older iPhones that had 30-pin connectors. It very likely only provides 1 amp or less of 5 volt power, which is pretty low for modern mobile phones.
