Why my phone won't find service and won't update

So my phone won't find service, stating to contact service provider. The Sim card doesn't seem to be recognized by the phone. I've gotten my service provider to send me a new SIM card, But we believe that have to do with Apple, because something is going wrong with my update and it trying to verify it
