I visited an unsafe website

To download a video from YouTube, I visited an unsafe website. There is a lock next to the URL, but when I searched about its safety, a lot of people said it's unsafe and actually got a virus that's pretty scary. I'm very worried now because I downloaded the video already. I moved the video to the trash and emptied the trash about two minutes after I downloaded it. I was using brave with an adblocker. What am I supposed to do now? Am I safe from being hacked?

Hey there!

Being a Mac, I’m sure it’s fine. I wouldn’t worry about it, however if you do notice your search engine changing, or redirecting your searches, or malicious pop ups:

First, I’d stick with Safari, which is much safer.

It sounds like you are already careful on the web, so I would just:

Clear your web history.

Quit all open apps.

Look in System Preferences > Users and Groups > Login Items.

If you see anything there you don’t recognize, or don’t need launching every time you log in, highlight it and press the “-“ below to remove it.

Next just hit the Apple > Restart, make sure to uncheck the option to “Re-open apps” > Restart.

Im sure in your case that would be sufficient, the OS does have a built in tool that removes known malware contracted from the internet, just by doing a simple restart.

Hope that helps! (And by the way, use caution with Extensions, some are more trouble than what they are worth, but then again some are great)! Thanks!
